Remember Tom? Your first MySpace friend? Before Facebook became the behemoth that it is today, MySpace ruled the social network landscape. Let’s face it though, most of us used MSN or ICQ to chat with our crushes… Prominent practices when using these programs were to use ASCII symbols to write your screen name, customizing your wallpapers, and displaying what songs you were listening to Windows Media Player or Winamp. Among the most popular messaging programs were: MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, and AIM. Unless someone really needed to use the phone, this is where instant messengers came in handy.īefore Messenger and WhatsApp, there was a host of instant messengers that we used to stay in touch with friends outside of school or work. Unlike routers, modems would generally allow only for a single computer to access the internet.īecause connecting to the internet required the use of a phone line, you would always have to decide between using the internet and calling your friends. Whether it was a 14k, 28k, or 56k modem, these magic little boxes provided access to the information superhighway -very different from today’s always-connected world. We’ve got a recording right here for you to relive the wait to get on the internet: The most-missed feature of the early internet: The sweet sound of dial-up modems. Fair warning, it leans heavily into a saccharine-soaked view of a bygone era. So we thought we’d walk down memory lane with this post, using the answers on our Facebook post as inspiration. There was more of a “wild west” feel to it and a greater sense of adventure. But most of all, commenters were nostalgic for the modern dial-up screeches. Some people mentioned sites like MSN and Yahoo chat rooms. Yahoo! Messenger 9 and 10 Beta are available for download here.We recently asked on Facebook what people missed most about the early days of the internet. Finally, basic IM functionality is also now built into Yahoo Mail allowing users to send and receive IMs inside the web app in both Mail and Classic Mail. The new versions add a lot of features like voice and video chat and a number of enhancements all around.īut if, for whatever reason, upgrading isn't an option for you, Yahoo offers a very sturdy online version at which, while it doesn't support any of the advanced functionality like voice calls, works great for regular IMs and even allows you to send SMS text messages. The first and most obvious one is to update to a newer version, anything above 8.0, including it, should work but Yahoo would much rather have you use Yahoo Messenger 9 or maybe even the new Yahoo Messenger 10 Beta. If you are still using the older versions, there are several ways to move on and still access your instant messenger after the cutoff date. And remember, no matter what version you migrate to, your contact list always goes with you.” “This means that if you are currently using a version of Yahoo! Messenger that is below 8.0, you will no longer be able to sign in and use it after September 30. Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.5 this Fall. The three months apparently weren't enough, as Yahoo extended the period to early September and is now announcing it will support the older versions even longer, until September 30, but that's it. In early June, the Internet-based company announced that support for Messenger versions 6 through 7.5 would be dropped in August with users asked to move to the latest Messenger 9. Yahoo seems to have little luck getting the few people still using the ancient Yahoo Messenger 6 and 7 to upgrade.
